Time for a Quick Zip

Okay, so maybe WinZip isn't the zip utility for you. If that's the case, check out PKZip. This archiving utility sports drag-and-drop functionality from File Manager or Explorer and also supports long filenames in Win95. PKZip automatically generates a 32-bit cyclic redundancy check which is enabled when extracting compressed files to ensure data integrity. Although not as snazzy as its competition, features like password protection and the ability to choose level compression are enough to place PKZip into our Reader's Choice list.

Versatile Media Viewer

"(VuePrint) is a wonderful multi-format picture viewer. Of course, it is possible also to save the opened file in any format: so it is a nice file-format conversion program too!"
Ewaldo L. M. Mehl via the Internet

VuePrint would probably be more aptly named "VueEverything." This program lets you open .GIF, .JPG , .PCX, .BMP, .RLE, .TGA, and .DIB files. Among other things, the built-in toolkit lets you rotate, brighten, darken and invert images. In addition VuePrint plays .WAV, .MIDI, .MCI, and .SLI files, and supports .AVI, .MPG, .BIF, .TIF, .MOV, .FLC, .FLI, and .MMM file formats. You can also turn your graphical files into a sequential or random-play screen saver.

"VuePrint opens a great variety of graphics formats and best of all, it is incredibly fast."

Keep All Your Apps in One Basket

TrayIcon is a 32-bit program that gives you single-click access to your favorite programs. After you enter the name and path of a program's icon you want in TrayIcon, it appears in the Windows 95 System Tray. Once there, all it takes is a left-click to run the program and a right-click to provide you with an application's properties.

Here's what you had to say about TrayIcon:

"I have 14 icons in my system tray. Everything from PowerDesk Explorer to a beta version of RAS+95. There is no limit to the number of icons that can be placed there."
"Joemny" via the Internet

"Makes all my favorite programs easy to get to. I like the easy access to the properties."
Jim Catapano via the Internet

Rotate the Tires and Check the Hardware

Trying to keep up with updates to hardware and software drivers can be about as successful as trying to squeeze in on the AutoBahn. Pick number seven, Oil Change, prevents your PC from becoming an antique before its time by identifying your hardware and software components, and then locating the updates on the Web. Once found, Oil Change dons a mechanic's hat, offers to replace the old files and installs the upgrades. If you're unsure about the new drivers, Oil Change will be happy to describe for you exactly what the update will do to your PC.

"(Oil Change) analyzes your computer and tells you what software you own that needs to be updated. It gives you ftp links so you can download an updated version or an upgrade."
